Train crashes into cairo main station: at least 20 dead

At least 20 people were killed in a serious train accident at cairo’s main train station, according to agyptian authorities. Another 45 people were injured, health minister hala said on wednesday.

According to the prosecutor’s office, a locomotive had hit a concrete block at the end of the tracks at high speed.

Footage from a surveillance camera is said to show the disaster at the ramses train station in downtown cairo. The video, which was circulated on the internet, showed how a locomotive crashed into 9.30 o’clock local time crashes into a bumper at the end of the tracks. Agypt’s minister-president mustafa madbuli visited the train station immediately after the tragedy. "We will not tolerate any slackness," madbuli shared. The general prosecutor took over the investigation.

Transport minister hischam arafat resigned this afternoon. The cabinet announced that the prime minister had accepted his resignation.

In the past few years there have been several serious train accidents in agypt. Many critics complain about the poor condition of trains and track equipment, as well as the training of train drivers. According to the agyptian statistics agency, the number of accidents involving trains has risen sharply in recent years. According to the report, there were almost 1800 accidents in 2017. However, the statistics agency does not specify the nature of the traps.

In july last year, 55 people were injured when a train derailed south of the capital cairo. In february, more than ten people died in the collision of two trains in the sudagyptian province of al-buhaira. In august 2017, more than 40 people died in a collision in alexandria.
